“Hair is a woman’s glory.”

I first heard these words uttered by Maya Angelou in the 2009 documentary “Good Hair” by Chris Rock. These words rang so true to me, that I’ve found myself coming back to this in conversation more times than I can count. Whether male or female or however one identifies, the idea of one’s hair being one’s glory cannot be denied. It goes beyond the cosmetic or the desire to be attractive. In ancient culture, long, healthy hair was a sign of fertility and power.

The latest trend (and I argue it’s one that is here to stay) is hair health and overall wellness in scalp health. As someone who has struggled with scalp health throughout her life, I was immediately drawn to these services and have found them to be completely transformative. When I started caring for my hair at its roots, I started seeing changes for the better in my hair and my overall wellbeing.

I recently experienced luxury scalp treatments at three businesses in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene so I could provide a first-hand, educated account to you, our followers. Below are my favorites and some interview notes from chats I had with the owners.

Roots Salon & Spa

Located at 1012 S Perry St in Spokane, Washington

Roots Salon & Spa is located in the Perry District of Spokane.

The Scalp Facial at Roots Hair Studio is a beautiful blend of luxury, restoration, and education. Amy Jones, owner of Roots, begins with a thorough assessment of your scalp with a microscopic camera. She points out problem areas, explaining that sebum and left over product can clog pores on any scalp just like on any face. She then gets to work carefully exfoliating and extracting and educating as she goes.

When she explained to me the importance of regularly getting the blood flowing in my scalp, I loved the experience even more! This does more than improve the health of our scalps. It also encourages hair growth and supports lymphatic flow for overall health. She used several brushes and combs (which she sent me home with to start my new scalp health routine). She then excused herself while I changed into a robe for the main part of the treatment.

I’d normally tuck into the luxury of it all (the facial, the arm and shoulder rub, the scalp massage, the red light therapy throughout), but the learner in me could not resist the opportunity to ask Amy some questions. She is quite remarkable and refreshingly different than the stereotypical salon owner. Her casual, direct, down-to-earth demeanor made me immediately trust her, and when I heard her story I knew my instincts were correct. Amy experienced hair loss after she donated half of her liver to save her son back in 2022. Instead of letting that experience break her, she dove into the reasons for hair loss and growth and how to maximize hair growth from the root. In two short years, she recovered from major surgery (her own and her young son’s), became an expert in scalp health, and grew an enviable mane.

I would gladly pay just to sit and soak up her presence. The fact that she delivers an impeccable experience, and my scalp feels amazing is just the cherry on top. The scalp facial at Roots is worth EVERY PENNY.

Here’s some of my interview with Amy Jones, owner of Roots.

The Head Spa at Runway Salon

Located at 3330 N Grandmill Ln in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

The Head Spa at Runway Salon is inspired by traditional Japanese head spas, and the entire experience oozes luxury and relaxation. As I sat in the waiting area that is playfully stylish without trying too hard, Juel, the owner, took time between clients to come over, introduce herself, and share a bit about the service I was about to experience. Juel is the kind of person whose presence is effortlessly significant without making you feel small, and that energy has spread to her entire staff. Even those ignorant of her impressive resume can sense her excellence. Her credits include publications such as Elle, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and TIME, and events such as the Emmys, The Oscars, The Grammys, and New York Fashion Week.

Ila Goodmansen, a stylist who specializes in head spa services along with blonding and hand-tied extensions and has the kind, calming demeanor of a Disney Princess, began by assessing my scalp with a microscopic camera. I was able to see the magnified view and discuss with her my scalp history and goals. She listened carefully and chose a treatment plan based on what she saw and my feedback before ushering me to the private head spa room. I changed into a cozy robe and climbed into the Japanese shampoo bed (basically the comfiest thing I’ve ever laid on). Ila returned and began my treatment that included a deep tissue scalp massage, a neck and shoulder massage, a multiple-step treatment application for my scalp, and aromatherapy. I have to be honest: I normally spend the entire treatment asking as many questions as possible, but I was so relaxed here that I FELL ASLEEP. I woke up to Ila removing my sheet mask and confirming my tea order. I slowly returned to earth feeling rested and light and lovely. I changed back into my clothes and met Ila in the main part of the salon where she was waiting with a hot cup of tea to give me the best blowout of my life. In the weeks following this treatment, I’ve noticed that my scalp feels cleaner and my hair needs to be washed less often.

I cannot wait to return to Runway Salon, not only for the luxury Japanese scalp treatment, but because I am secretly plotting to make Ila and Juel my friends.

Here’s some from my interview with Juel, owner of Runway Salon.

Who is your typical scalp health client?

Our typical client for The Head Spa at Runway Salon falls into one of two main categories. First, we have individuals who come to us with specific scalp concerns, such as issues with oiliness, itchiness, hair loss or dryness. They’re seeking targeted solutions to improve their scalp health and overall hair vitality. Secondly, we attract clients who are looking for a luxurious, relaxing experience. These guests appreciate the calming and rejuvenating benefits of our Head Spa treatments as a form of self-care and stress relief. Whether they have a particular scalp issue or are simply indulging in a high-end relaxation experience, our Head Spa is designed to meet a range of needs with its blend of therapeutic and pampering elements.

What do you wish folks knew about scalp health?

I wish more people understood just how crucial scalp health is for overall hair health and growth. The scalp is essentially the foundation for your hair; a healthy scalp leads to healthier, stronger hair. When the scalp is well-maintained, it promotes better circulation, which is vital for nourishing hair follicles and encouraging growth.

Additionally, regular scalp massages can be incredibly beneficial. They help with lymphatic drainage, which removes toxins and reduces puffiness, acting almost like a mini facelift by stimulating the micro muscles of the face that aren’t often exercised. This stimulation helps lift and rejuvenate the facial area, contributing to a more youthful appearance.

Moreover, investing time in scalp care and self-care practices can have a profound impact on overall well-being. The relaxation and stress relief that come from such treatments can positively affect one’s mood and quality of life. It’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about nurturing yourself and recognizing how taking care of your scalp can lead to broader benefits for both your hair and your mental health.

What sets you apart from other scalp health professionals?

What truly distinguishes our Head Spa is the combination of our advanced expertise and our use of premium products. Our treatments are performed by licensed cosmetologists who have received specialized training in both scalp and hair health as well as advanced scalp massage techniques. This ensures that every client receives top-tier care tailored to their individual needs.

We also use only the luxury Kerastase line of products, which are renowned for their effectiveness and high quality. Our process is meticulous and designed to deliver exceptional results. We start with a thorough double cleanse to remove impurities, followed by a deep conditioning masque applied under our micro mist tent to enhance absorption and hydration. We finish with a Kerastase scalp serum massage, which not only nourishes the scalp but also provides a rejuvenating experience.

The use of these superior products, combined with our personalized approach and professional expertise, ensures that every treatment delivers instant, visible results and a truly luxurious finish. Our commitment to excellence in both product and technique is what sets us apart in the world of scalp health.

What scalp health treatments should we be incorporating into our routines? And how often?

To maintain optimal scalp health, incorporating a few key treatments into your routine is essential. First and foremost, using superior products like those from Kerastase can make a significant difference. These high-quality products are formulated to deliver essential nutrients directly to the scalp and hair, boost follicular activity, and offer protection against environmental damage.

For regular scalp care, consider incorporating the following practices:

  • Scalp cleansing: A thorough scalp cleanse is crucial. Use a high-quality shampoo designed to address your specific scalp concerns. Cleansing should be done regularly—typically, 2-3 times a week depending on your hair type and lifestyle—to keep the scalp free from buildup and impurities.
  • Scalp massage: Massaging products into your scalp enhances blood flow, which is vital for healthy hair growth. It helps to stimulate the hair follicles and promote nutrient delivery. When applying products, take a few extra minutes to gently massage your scalp with your fingertips.
  • Deep conditioning: Once a week, use a deep conditioning treatment to provide your scalp and hair with intense hydration and nourishment. Kerastase’s conditioning masques are excellent for this purpose, as they are designed to penetrate deeply and improve the overall health of your hair.
  • Overnight scalp serums: Incorporating an overnight scalp serum into your routine can be particularly beneficial. These serums work while you sleep to soothe, hydrate, and revitalize the scalp. Applying a serum before bed allows it to work deeply and effectively, helping to restore balance and promote a healthier scalp environment.

By consistently using high-quality products and integrating these treatments into your routine, you can significantly improve both the health of your scalp and the quality of your hair. The key is to tailor these practices to your individual needs and to ensure that you’re giving your scalp the care and attention it deserves.

What should we all be doing at home to improve/protect our scalp health?

Maintaining good scalp health at home is key to complementing professional treatments and ensuring long-term results. Here are a few essential practices:

  • Use quality products: Continue using high-quality, targeted products for your scalp and hair. Products from premium lines like Kerastase & L’Oreal Pro provide the nutrients and protection needed to maintain scalp health and enhance hair quality.
  • Be gentle with your scalp: Avoid aggressive scrubbing or harsh shampooing. Instead, use a gentle touch when cleansing and massaging your scalp. This helps prevent irritation and damage to the scalp.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well: Good scalp health is closely tied to overall health. Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support a healthy scalp and hair growth.
  • Avoid overuse of heat and chemicals: Minimize the use of heat styling tools and chemical treatments, which can damage both the hair and scalp. When you do use them, make sure to use heat protectants and follow up with restorative treatments.
  • Regular scalp massages: Incorporate daily or weekly scalp massages into your routine. This helps stimulate blood flow and can enhance the absorption of any treatments or products you apply.
  • Protect from environmental damage: Protect your scalp from excessive sun exposure, pollution, and harsh weather conditions. Wearing a hat or using protective products can help shield your scalp from environmental stressors.
  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase: Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase. These materials create less friction than cotton, reducing hair breakage and scalp irritation while you sleep.

By integrating these practices into your daily routine, you can significantly improve and protect your scalp health, ensuring that your hair stays strong and vibrant.

Self Care Spa & Lounge

Located at 16114 E Indiana Ave # 105 in the Spokane Valley

Self Care Spa & Lounge is located in the Spokane Valley.

Every single detail of this space and experience has been thought out fully by owner Khuyen. From the angel numbers above each door to the decorations that heal your inner child a bit at each visit, the Self Care Spa & Lounge feels like an escape. I knew I was in Spokane Valley, Washington, but I felt like I had snuck away for a mid-week vacation. I experienced the luxury Korean Scalp treatment during one of the most stressful weeks of my life when my mental and physical health were hanging by a thread. After a couple of hours being spoiled by Khuyen, I felt like a new person. My scalp felt cleaner than it ever had, my skin was glowing, and my sore muscles felt better than they had in a long time. Khuyen greeted me at the door like an excited girlfriend welcoming me to her home. She gave me a tour of the space, outlining the treatment process as she went. I then changed into a robe, placed all of my jewelry in the adorable little dish she provided, and hopped into the treatment bed for an all-inclusive cleansing experience.

Khuyen started by assessing my scalp, addressing my problem areas, and creating a custom treatment plan. Then, she placed an eye mask on my face for optimal relaxation, and the fun started. She used everything from a fine tooth comb to high-tech tools like red light therapy and a hydro dermabrasion to leave my scalp feeling amazing. She even performs a Hydro Facial during the process! She also massages the scalp multiple times with multiple tools, applies multiple Korean scalp products, and gives you a hot stone massage for your shoulders, arms, legs, and feet. The experience ends with time lounging in the zen room under a dryer with a cup of tea. I left feeling like the happiest noodle and feeling like my scalp was brand new.

Beyond the luxury of it all, I loved chatting with Khuyen and learning about the importance of scalp health for overall hair health and growth. She is passionate about helping her clients solve problems, heal their scalps, and find overall wellness in the process. Khuyen grew up in Vietnam and never felt pretty or like she fit with the standards of beauty there (which is shocking, because she is striking). She recounts the first time she felt really beautiful when her aunt took her shopping here in the United States for clothes that fit her tall frame, so she is committed to making others feel that same way. I can affirm that you will leave feeling beautiful and loved and valued and your scalp health will have greatly improved.

Here’s some from my interview with Khuyen Siharath, owner of Self Care Spa & Lounge.

Who is your typical scalp health client?

My clients seeking scalp health solutions include both men and women who grapple with scalp issues personally or are committed to a holistic approach for maintaining scalp well-being.

What do you wish folks knew about scalp health?

Sitting around with wet hair (and a wet scalp by proxy) is the perfect breeding ground for unwanted bacteria on the scalp. If you’ve ever thrown your soaking wet hair into a bun, or sat with conditioner in your hair for several hours, you will likely have experienced an itchy scalp. This is an example of the irritation the scalp experiences as a result of bacterial growth, and it goes to show just how quickly the effects of bacteria will occur. Most bacteria thrive in a neutral pH, which also happens to be that of water. Allowing your hair and scalp to dry properly after cleansing will let it return to its acidic pH, ideal for scalp health and unsuitable for unwanted bacteria.

What sets you apart from other scalp health professionals?

As the pioneer in offering this treatment in Spokane, I stand out from other professionals. My holistic approach to scalp health incorporates Korean products, and I educate clients on how lifestyle habits impact overall well-being. K-Head Spa is the brand I carry professionally as a back bar for Scalp Treatment, featuring natural remedies like rosemary, castor oil, and peppermint, also advanced collagen and keratin. Honesty and informative communication are essential for me in building trust with clients. For instance, I ensure clients don’t rebook too soon—waiting at least 4-6 weeks—since this isn’t just a fancy hair wash; it’s a thorough scalp cleanse.

What scalp health treatments should we be incorporating into our routines? And how often?

Incorporate massage: Think of scalp care as an extension of your skincare routine. While applying the right products in the right order is vital, stimulating the skin is also essential. Whether you’re trying a scalp scrub, working in a scalp serum or simply a targeted shampoo, massage the formula into the skin with gentle circular motions to enhance the experience, stimulate blood flow to the area, and allow the active ingredients to work. Do it every time you shampoo your hair. I have been loving this electric scalp brush and you can easily get one on Amazon here.

What should we all be doing at home to improve/protect our scalp health?

  • Choose gentle hair care products: Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and avoid products with harsh chemicals or alcohol.
  • Invest in a water filtered shower head: A high-quality filter can remove metals from the water before it reaches your scalp, hair and skin, resulting in softer water that helps clean and hydrate your scalp. At my spa and lounge, I offer the famous viral Jolie filtered shower head.
  • Hydration: Whether you’ve got an oily or dry scalp, incorporating healthy routines like staying hydrated is key to overall skin health. In addition to increasing your H2O intake, applying regular moisturizing treatments or scalp serums can improve both a dry and oily scalp.

I hope this information helps you improve your scalp health and in turn, maintain or improve the glory that is your hair. Whether you’re able to incorporate regular spa treatments like the ones I described above or simply add a few steps to your at-home routine, you deserve a healthy scalp and the glory that is healthy hair we all do!

Here’s to fostering that glory,

xoxo your favorite late bloomer
