The leaves are beginning to change and we are entering cozy season, aka fall. Fall is known for all things pumpkin, sweater weather, football, and snuggling in at home with friends and family. For some, the pace may pick up as we prepare for the holidays, but the entrance of fall seems to bring a lull enjoyed by all, a slowing down, a cozying up under thick blankets, and the best movie weather there is. Nothing warms my heart like a cup of apple cider or hot chocolate and a fall film.
Here are a couple of my favorites, directed and filmed in Washington state, that will give you all the fall vibes and even a spook or two.
‘Practical Magic’

The 1998 Halloween classic, “Practical Magic” was filmed in the town of Coupeville on Whidbey Island in Western Washington. The film follows two young sisters, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who live with their aunts off the coast of Massachusetts. The fan-favorite evolves with the sisters through childhood into young adulthood as they navigate their magic powers.
According to People Magazine, a sequel is in the works!

‘Twilight’

America’s favorite vampire movie series, “Twilight,” was partially filmed right here in Washington state in the town of Forks, though only a few scenes from our state actually made the cut. The tale of a vampire and a human falling in love quickly became one of America’s most beloved movie series, let alone vampire series. Its main characters, Edward (played by Robert Pattinson) and Bella (played by Kristin Stewart) meet at a local high school (filmed in Forks) where they experience an undeniable connection. The beach scenes were filmed in Forks, as well.
The town of Forks has seen a large boost in tourism since “Twilight” first aired in 2008. According to King5 in Seattle, visitors reached a peak of 70,000 guests in 2010. The movie franchise has a total of five movies with release dates ranging from 2008 to 2012.
No matter what your fall line up of films is, if you’re a Washingtonian, make sure to put these two local legends on your seasonal movie roster. Both are stream-able or available for purchase online.
