Looking for a little getaway without straying too far from Spokane? Just a quick 20–30 minute drive lands you in Cheney, Washington, a charming small town that makes the perfect day trip destination. As an Eastern Washington University alum, Cheney will always hold a special place in my heart, so I had to share a little small town love. You don’t have to see it all in one day, pick three or all of these spots but, here are my top Cheney highlights!

Coffee + Breakfast at The Mason Jar in Cheney Washington
Start your day at The Mason Jar, Cheney’s cozy local café and a true town staple. Whether you’re craving a classic latte, a seasonal specialty, or one of their famous breakfast scrambles, this spot is all about comfort and charm. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, sip your coffee a little longer, and soak up the small-town vibes before heading out to explore. It’s truly a perfect kickoff to a day in Cheney.

Explore Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge in Cheney Washington
After breakfast, head out to Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, just a short drive from downtown Cheney. With miles of trails winding through wetlands, forests, and open prairies, it’s a haven for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers alike. The peaceful landscape is the perfect way to recharge and stretch your legs.
Keep your eyes peeled: You might spot moose, elk, or a flock of trumpeter swans!

After a morning of exploring, stop by Barrel House and Pub for a relaxed meal or refreshing drink. Known for its friendly vibe, craft beers, and hearty pub fare, Barrel House is a favorite among locals. Whether you’re grabbing lunch, enjoying a cold beverage on the patio, or catching up with friends, it’s the perfect spot to recharge and soak in Cheney’s charm. (I will always recommend their fish and chips!)
The menu features a mix of classic pub favorites and locally inspired dishes, so there’s something for every appetite. Plus, the cozy interior and welcoming atmosphere make it a great place to linger, chat, and plan your next stop in town!

Wander Downtown Cheney Washington
Since you’re already there, take some time to wander downtown Cheney! Main Street is lined with unique shops, local gems, and historic storefronts that give this college town its undeniable charm (Plus the parking is free). From cozy book nooks to vibrant boutiques, Cheney’s downtown invites you to slow down, explore, and discover spots you’ll want to come back to again and again.

Stroll Through Eastern Washington University
No day in Cheney is complete without a stroll through Eastern Washington University’s campus. With its historic brick buildings, tree-lined pathways, and wide-open green spaces, EWU feels both lively and welcoming.
And don’t forget to say hello to the campus squirrels (they’re basically local celebrities). A quick walk through campus gives you a real sense of Cheney’s spirit: the energy of student life, the pride of its history, and the charm of a true college town.
Grab a Slice at Rosa’s and Watch the Sunset over Cheney Hills

Wrap up your day by picking up a Cheney staple pizza from Rosa’s, a local favorite. Then, head to 50-Acre Park on Betz Road to watch the sun dip behind the infamous Cheney Hills. The rolling hills, golden light, and serene scenery make for the perfect end to your day, a peaceful moment to savor your small-town adventure and reflect on all the charm Cheney has to offer!
