I’ve spent most of my life surrounded by books. It’s my way of living a hundred lives without ever leaving home. Books have always been a constant in my life, offering comfort during quiet moments, sparking creativity, and providing endless inspiration. It’s no surprise that this lifelong love eventually led me to pursue an English degree, turning passion into purpose. Because of that connection, sharing my favorite local bookstores in Coeur d’Alene and Spokane feels especially meaningful. These are places that hold the same magic I’ve found in stories for as long as I can remember.

Each shop offers its own unique experience, whether through thoughtfully curated shelves, rare and unexpected finds, or the warm, welcoming atmosphere created by passionate booksellers who truly love what they do. More than just places to shop, these bookstores serve as community hubs, bringing together readers, writers, and creatives alike. They’re spaces where stories are shared, conversations naturally unfold, and a deep love of literature is woven into the fabric of the local community.

I’m an English major, and I consider this bookstore truly unmatched. Located in Spokane’s Garland District, Giant Nerd Books is a rare find – literally. The shop specializes in rare and antiquarian books, a detail that amazes me every time I step inside. They’re especially known for signed, limited, and first-edition books. They focus on sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and radical politics, however the range of genres is impressively broad. My personal favorite section is their classic literature and poetry collection. The ambiance is immaculate! Pair this book stop with noise cancelling headphones and a hot coffee for an elevated experience (especially in the fall!)
