In town for Hoopfest? Here’s where to grab food and drinks
Hoopfest, the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world, began forming in the late 1980s. From the start, it wasn’t just made of asphalt, backboards and basketballs, but blood, sweat and tears. So much passion and heart has gone into Hoopfest from its conception, and it is still felt by all year after year.
The idea of Hoopfest was emulated after a Michigan tournament named the Gus Macker sprinkled in with several other miniature tournaments, according to reporting on the history of Hoopfest by the Spokesman Review. With trips back and forth from one outside hoop tournament to another, the main goal, initially, was to fundraise for the Special Olympics.
The first Hoopfest took place in 1990 with 512 teams. The competition grew quickly. This year, 24,000 players are competing. Kicking off Saturday, June 29th in downtown Spokane, Hoopfest will turn the city into a scene from Space Jam (the original, of course) with all types of cartoons, players and spectators turning out.
